STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- A deadly weekend winter storm packing hurricane-force winds left about a quarter-million homes in Sweden without power Monday.
At its peak Sunday, winds of 90 mph downed trees and power lines in southern Sweden, cutting power to 275,000, Stockholm's The Local newspaper reported.
The Eon electric utility said it had dispatched 1,500 repair workers, including crews in eight helicopters in remote regions. By Monday morning, 226,000 homes still had no power, the report said.
Three deaths were attributed to the storm. In three incidents, two men and a 9-year-old boy were killed by falling trees, police said.
Train service throughout southern Sweden ground to a halt Sunday, but some unobstructed routes were functioning Monday morning.
Meteorologist Jonas Hoglund at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute said the high winds were "very unusual" for the country, and warned mountainous regions and coastal areas would see more windy conditions Monday.
