Churchill statue targeted by vandals

LONDON, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- A statue of World War II era British Prime Minister Winston Churchill has been targeted by vandals in central London.

The stone plinth that serves as the base of the monument, which honors a man named as the greatest Briton of all time in a 2002 poll, was covered in streaks of red paint Sunday, the BBC reported Monday.

Police said the attack on the statue was being treated as criminal damage.

The Parliament Square monument was famously targeted in 2000 by anti-capitalist protesters who placed a turf "Mohican" on the statue's head.
