U.S. soldier accused of rape in Seoul

SEOUL, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- South Korean police Sunday accused a U.S. soldier of raping and beating a 67-year-old Korean woman in western Seoul.

Police requested an arrest warrant for the 8th Army soldier, who they have identified only by the letter G, the Korea Times reported. Police said they caught the soldier after officers heard the woman screaming during the attack.

Maj. Gen. John Morgan, acting 8th Army Commander, issued a statement of apology.

"While no words can lessen the anguish of the victim or her family, I deeply regret and personally apologize for this terrible incident that has resulted in grave injury to a Korean civilian," he said. "This vicious act is an affront to all soldiers. It taints both our reputations and the sacrifices made by all (U.S. Forces Korea) service members who live and work honorably within this great society."

A joint investigation was under way, the newspaper said.
