LONDON, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates and British Prime Minister Tony Blair met in London Sunday on President George W. Bush's new Iraq war strategy.
Gates -- on the first stop of a weeklong trip to Europe and the Middle East intended to gain support for Bush's plan -- talked with Blair and other British officials about Britain's plans to withdraw some of its 7,000 troops from Iraq, The New York Times reported.
A senior U.S. military official traveling with Gates told reporters Gates wanted to know if the British plan to begin withdrawals sometime this year.
Gates briefed Blair and British Defense Secretary Des Browne on Bush's plan and discussed whether Britain might send more troops to Afghanistan, the Times said. Britain currently has about 5,000 soldiers deployed in Afghanistan as part of a NATO contingent.
Gates plans to travel to Afghanistan and Iraq, and also plans to hold talks with officials from several of Iraq's neighbors, the newspaper said.
