LOS ANGELES, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Two people died when a business jet crashed just after takeoff near Van Nuys Airport in Los Angeles.
The Cessna Citation had two crew members aboard, a spokesman at SunQuest Executive Air Charter, which operated the flight, told the Los Angeles Times. Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Ron Myers confirmed that two bodies were recovered.
FAA spokesman Ian Gregor identified the plane as a Cessna Citation, a business craft that can carry from four to 10 people.
Gregor said the craft took off from the airport about 10:55 a.m. Friday, bound for Long Beach, Calif. The pilot radioed that he needed to return to the airport, but no reason was immediately available, the Times reported.
As it was returning to the airport, the plane crashed about a half mile north of the facility, said airport spokeswoman Stacy Geere.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration will investigate.
