Generation Next: Tolerant with tattoos

WASHINGTON, Jan. 12 (UPI) -- A survey finds that U.S. young people in "Generation Next" are likely to be tolerant, comfortable with technology, Democratic, tattooed and eager to get rich.

The Pew Research Institute report finds that those in the 18-25 cohort have much in common with previous generations. They are generally optimistic, believe they have more opportunities than their parents and older siblings and look forward to marriage and a family.

Almost half of those surveyed, 48 percent, identified themselves as Democrats, and only 35 percent as Republicans, making them the least Republican generation. They tend to be comfortable with racial and ethnic diversity, half say immigration makes the United States stronger and half support gay marriage.

But they are also the generation most likely to support privatizing Social Security. They also support business along with regulation of business.

About half have had something other than their ears pierced, dyed their hair an unusual color or gotten a tattoo. Tattoos are most common, with about one-third sporting body art.
