Spain: Prime minister called 'insensitive'

Jan. 11, 2007 at 8:24 PM   |   Comments

MADRID, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero was lambasted Thursday for calling the recent terror bombing at a Madrid airport a "tragic accident."

Zapatero quickly corrected himself, though critics said the prime minister displayed insensitivity to the victims of last month's attack.

The December bombing at Madrid International Airport left two people dead and 19 injured. The blast was attributed to the Basque separatist group ETA.

For three decades, ETA militants have been fighting for a Basque homeland along the French-Spanish border. Their attacks have claimed some 850 lives.
