Ecuador and Colombia end drug row

QUITO, Ecuador, Jan. 11 (UPI) -- Ecuador and Colombia have come to an agreement over their long-running row over Colombia's drug-spraying program along their shared border.

Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa said Colombian officials have agreed to notify Ecuador when Colombia is conducting spraying operations intended to eradicate illegal drug crops, El Comercio reported Thursday.

Quito officials have lambasted the Colombian program as an act of hostility that must be resolved with the help of the hemispheric body.

Last year, Ecuador fought for Colombia to stop the drug spraying near its territory, saying the chemicals used were toxic and affecting citizens living along the border.

Colombia -- the world's largest producer of cocaine and the recipient of billions of U.S. dollars in aid to help eradicate the crop -- resumed spraying the area this week, but contends that the spray it uses is not harmful to people.
