SEATTLE, Jan. 10 (UPI) -- The Federal Aviation Administration will update the software at Sea-Tac International Airport after air traffic controllers complained of ghost radar images.
The false images, which force air-traffic controllers to redirect flights, are showing up almost daily, the Seattle Times reported Wednesday.
The ghost radar images look like planes or other airborne objects, but are actually nothing at all -- something that is nearly impossible to tell from an air-traffic control center. Controllers have warned the FAA repeatedly to update the system.
"If at any point it's determined the system is un-certifiable or unsafe, we take that system out of service," Dave Adams, the FAA's district manager, told the newspaper. The new software is scheduled to be installed at the end of January.
The ghosts are usually duplicates or reflections of other aircraft already on the screen, an air-traffic controller said.
