Bush, Barroso laud morning session

WASHINGTON, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- U.S. President Bush described his White House meetings Monday with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso as "frank and open."

"We talked about the importance of the trans-Atlantic relationship and how we can work to improve it," Bush said. "We talked about the importance for Europe and the United States to resolve any differences we have when it comes to the Doha round for trade, so that we can promote international trade."

The leaders agreed to help impoverished nations by encouraging "the spread of wealth and opportunity through open and reasonable and fair trade," Bush said.

They also agreed on the need for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian crisis and "talked about ways that we need to work together to see if we can't bring that vision to fruition," Bush said.

Barroso said he looked forward to talking with Bush during a lunch session about global warming, security and economic development. He said he would also brief the U.S. president about his recent trip to Sudan.

"I can tell you that it's really a tragedy, what's going on, and we cannot accept that tragedy going on without the united response of the international community," Barroso said.
