Mexico: Govt. sends troops to Tijuana

MEXICO CITY, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Hoping to curb violence, the Mexican government has sent 3,000 troops to the border city of Tijuana, El Universal reported Wednesday.

The troops will also work to thwart drug trafficking from the city directly across the border from San Diego, Calif.

The deployment is part of an effort by new Mexican President Felipe Calderon to curb gang and drug violence that run rampant in several border cities.
