Iran wants reparations for 1980s Iraq war

TEHRAN, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- Iran said it plans to take legal action against Iraq seeking damages for the 1980s U.S-backed war triggered by late Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.

"One of Saddam's crimes is damages he has inflicted on Iran which will be raised with the Iraqi government at an appropriate time," legislative speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel told the official Islamic Republic News Agency Wednesday.

It's estimated the Iran-Iraq war, which lasted from September 1980 to August 1988, killed hundreds of thousands of Iranians and Iraqis and caused more than 1 million casualties.

Haddah-Adel said Iraq has to settle its domestic discord first before it can make reparations for the Iran-Iraq war.

"Iran has repeatedly announced that end of Saddam's life will not put an end to series of his crimes then backed by the United States," Haddad-Adel said.
