WASHINGTON, Jan. 2 (UPI) -- Jack Ford, son of former President Gerald Ford, used the trip to Washington for his father's state funeral to show his own children where he grew up.
Ford and his sons, Jonathan and Christian, were driven to the house in Alexandria, Va., by a military chauffeur. The family lives in San Diego.
"It was a great neighborhood to grow up in, a lot of kids," Ford told the Grand Rapids Press. "It was very normal, very middle American. We used to walk to school every day. You'd jump on your bike and go riding down the street, and your parents didn't worry about you."
Gerald and Betty Ford had the house built in 1955, six years after his arrival in Washington as a freshman congressman, and remained there until he succeeded President Richard Nixon in 1974. The house was the third in what was then a new neighborhood.
The house is now vacant and up for sale with an asking price of $999,999.
Since Gerald Ford's death last week, a small but steady stream of visitors have driven by. The neighbors also placed a sign that reads "God bless Pres. Ford."
