Two in Japan choke on New Year rice cakes

TOKYO, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- New Year's Eve ended tragically for two elderly men in Japan who choked to death on the traditional holiday rice cakes.

The Kyodo news service said Monday the fatalities occurred in Niigata and Ibaraka prefectures, while another five people were hospitalized under similar circumstances in the Tokyo area.

Rice cakes are a New Year's tradition in Japan and are generally served in soup.

The victims were all elderly and lost consciousness.
