JERUSALEM, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Israeli security officials Monday refuted Palestinian claims of progress in talks to exchange Palestinian prisoners for kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.
There had been reports in recent days from the Palestinian camp claming significant progress in reaching the deal, in which as many as 1,500 Palestinians would be released.
But Monday morning, after a meeting between Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and former Deputy Shin Bet Chief Ofer Dekel, sources told YNet News they were unfamiliar with such developments.
Egypt and Saudi Arabia are also involved in hammering out a swap agreement for Shalit, who was abducted last summer in a border crossing attack.
Further clouding the issue, the London-based A-Shraq al Awsat newspaper reported Monday the three Palestinian organizations holding Shalit had received details of Israel's current compromise offer from the Egyptians, the report said.
