NEW YORK, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Ban Ki-moon, the new U.N. secretary-general, has appointed an Indian diplomat as his chief of staff and a Haitian reporter to head communications.
Ban officially took office Monday.
"Today's appointments will serve as a solid basis for establishing my team and pursuing a program of reform of the secretariat to provide continuity along with change," Ban said in a statement announcing the appointments Sunday.
Both Vijay Nambiar and Michelle Montas have experience inside and outside the United Nations.
Nambiar's most recent post was special adviser to Secretary-General Kofi Annan, where he represented the United Nations in the Middle East immediately after Israel's war in Lebanon this summer. He had a long career with the Indian Foreign Service, including postings as ambassador to Pakistan, China and the United Nations.
Montas is currently the head of the United Nation's French radio service. In 2003, she was spokeswoman for the president of the General Assembly.
