OTTAWA, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board wants to know whether children in Israel are being abused, as some Israelis seek asylum in Canada.

The board is asking Israel's National Council for the Child for records on the treatment of immigrant children in Israel.

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported on the inquiry, in which Canadian authorities are seeking information to evaluate political asylum cases.

Haaretz reported that in 2005, 679 Israeli citizens sought asylum, many of them in Canada.

Canadian authorities are also seeking information about how the Israeli government has been responding to cases of abuse involving immigrant children, the newspaper said.
