British festivities canceled due to storms

LONDON, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Many New Year's celebrations across Britain were canceled or postponed Sunday due to rain and high winds.

Among other celebrations, the windstorms caused a Liverpool fireworks display to be rescheduled for Jan. 5 and a Belfast outdoor concert was canceled, the BBC reported Sunday.

However, an Edinburgh, Scotland, party featuring the Pet Shop Boys is expected to go ahead as scheduled, as is a pyrotechnic and lighting display in London.

The BBC said the wind and rain is expected to be especially harsh in the northern parts of Britain Sunday evening.

"Northern Ireland, central and southern Scotland and northern England will see gusts of wind in excess of 70 mph," said a BBC weather unit spokeswoman.

"The rain will become less of an issue as the night wears on because the wind will push it into the sea. The wind will become a major focus around 9 p.m., just as the celebrations will be getting going."
