No food, no toilets, no gate for travelers

AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Passengers on an American Airlines flight rerouted from Dallas due to storms were stuck on the plane grounded in Austin, Texas, for more than eight hours.

Passengers spent 12 hours total on the plane from San Francisco with no food and dirty toilets, the Dallas Morning News reported Saturday.

"The flight was early to begin with," passenger Jeff Hunt told the newspaper. "Few of us had breakfast."

The pilot said the plane was not allowed to pull up to a terminal at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport because the gates were full.

The plane, which left California at 9:30 a.m. Dallas time, finally pulled into the Austin terminal around 9 p.m.

American Airlines spokesman Andy Backover could not say whether the airline has a policy on the length of time passengers can spend on grounded airplanes.

The Friday morning flight was one of 67 diverted by American, which also canceled 448 flights because of the Texas storms.
