NEW YORK, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- New York police have taken a woman for psychiatric tests after she allegedly attacked her mother with a samurai sword during a fight about cigarettes.

Police said Erica Torres was taken to Jacobi Medical Center after she repeatedly cut her mother with the weapon, which she received as a Christmas gift from her boyfriend, the New York Daily News reported Friday.

Torres' mother, Sylvia Pantoja, reportedly attempted to intervene on a fight between Torres and her sister over a pack of cigarettes.

"She just went lunatic on everybody," said Jasmin Cabrera, Torres' sister. "She was up until 2 saying she was going to kill everybody. Then she took the sword and went wild."

"She stabbed my mom in the arm and three times in the leg and on the chin," Cabrera said.

Pantoja locked Torres inside a bedroom and called police.

The mother refused medical treatment, the Daily News said.
