There was wide disagreement about what to do with Saddam's remains, a subject that U.S. and Iraqi officials privately said had been raised at the highest levels, The New York Times reported.

The most discussed options, the newspaper said, include sending the body to Saddam's family in Jordan -- where two of his daughters live -- burying him in a secret location, or sending the body immediately to Saddam's hometown of Tikrit for burial with members of his tribe.

If the decision were made to bury Saddam in a secret location, the Times said there were two options -- to keep it secret permanently, or to disinter the body at a later date and send it to his family or tribe.

The governor of Salahedeen Province, which includes Tikrit, suggested holding a state funeral, but a Western official told the Times that idea had little chance of becoming reality.

Iraqi officials said the hanging would be videotaped, but it was unclear Saturday morning whether the video would be released to the public.
