Thousands struggle in Indonesia flooding

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Waters were receding in Indonesia, where flooding displaced an estimated 400,000 people.

At least 105 people were dead, hundreds of people were missing and many more stranded as roads and bridges were swept away by rain and landslides, hampering rescue and evacuation efforts, the BBC reported Wednesday.

Residents were stranded in the hardest-hit districts of Aceh and North Sumatra, the BBC said.

In other areas, residents were returning to find their homes caked with mud.

Military helicopters were dropping relief supplies and medical workers to the stranded areas.
