BRASILIA, Brazil, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced Wednesday he would raise the country's minimum wage by 8.5 percent, Agencia Estado reported.

The minimum monthly wage for Brazilians will be raised to 400 reals, or about $177. The increase is reportedly 5 percent higher than the rate of inflation.

Da Silva, who won re-election to another four-year term in October, campaigned on a promise to pay greater attention to the needs of poor Brazilians during his second and final term in office.
