Kwanzaa begins

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 26 (UPI) -- Tuesday marks the start of the seven-day festival of Kwanzaa, marking the 40th anniversary of the festival that was created by Maulana Karenga.

The Official Kwanzaa Web Site said that Karenga, the Black studies professor at Cal State Long Beach, created Kwanzaa in 1966 to reaffirm and restore blacks' ties to African culture, as well as reinforce bonds among black people and introduce and the "Nguzo Saba," the Seven Principles, Los Angeles's KNBC-TV reported.

The Seven Principles are unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity and faith.
