TUL KARM, West Bank, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- An Israeli platoon leader was dismissed Sunday, five days after a soldier from his unit killed a 14-year-old Palestinian girl in West Bank, officials said.
Maj. Gen. Yair Naveh, the overall West Bank commander, conducted an investigation into the shooting by a separation fence near Tul Karm, Harretz said Sunday. Military police detectives also are investigating.
The company commander also received an official reprimand and the soldier who shot the girl was suspended from duty indefinitely.
The girl's father was in jail for illegally crossing into Israel when the shooting occurred and a court refused to release him to attend his daughter's funeral or be at home for the mourning period. The man was released on bail Friday and will return to jail Tuesday, where he will remain until his trial, police said.
An investigation revealed the girl and a friend were near the fence when soldiers spotted them. As the two girls tried to flee, a soldier serving as a marksman fired two bullets, hitting the 14-year-old.
Investigators said the marksman did not receive permission to fire.
