KIEV, Ukraine, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Ukraine's president and prime minister during a one-day visit to Kiev to work out economic issues.
Relations between the two countries were strained by the Orange Revolution of 2004 in Ukraine, which installed Viktor Yushchenko in the presidency. But Putin said that Russia and Ukraine have many economic interests in common, the Novosti news agency reported.
"There is a desire, both on the Russian and Ukrainian sides, to look for compromise solutions in areas where they have not yet been found," Putin told reporters after his meetings.
The former president, Viktor Yanukovych, a pro-Russian, became prime minister this year, resolving a political crisis.
Russian ministers and their Ukrainian counterparts signed cooperation statements on the transfer of citizens of third countries and stateless persons, border crossings, intellectual property and cultural exchange.
One touchy issue is Russian military use of Ukraine's coastal waters.
