WASHINGTON, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Speaking with "Face the Nation" Sunday, U.S. first lady Laura Bush downplayed her recovery from a recent bout with cancer, and the media's ignorance of it.
The wife of U.S. President George Bush admitted she is feeling fine after having a cancerous growth removed from her skin and that it "didn't occur" to her to publicly reveal it, she told the CBS News' program.
"It just didn't occur to me. Also, of course, I am a private citizen," the first lady admitted. "I mean, I have to say that as well. I don't release the results of my regular physicals like the president does, of course."
In addition to having the squamous cell carcinoma safely removed, Mrs. Bush said it has indeed been a difficult year for her, the president and all of the United States.
"And I think this year, especially, watching the violence in Iraq is difficult for Americans and difficult for people around the world to watch," she said. "And certainly our worry -- all of us, not just the president's and mine but everybody's -- about our troops who are deployed made this year difficult."
