Poll: Almost half in U.S. creationist
TOKYO, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Japanese Emperor Akihito was asked about the touching subject of honoring the dead of World War II at a 73rd birthday news conference in Tokyo.
The emperor, who was only 11 when Japan surrendered to the allies in 1945, said that the country needs to remember the horrors of war, the Mainichi Daily News reported.
"I sincerely hope that the facts about the war and the war dead will continue to be correctly conveyed to those of generations that do not have direct knowledge of the war so that the kind of ravages of war that we experienced in the past will never be repeated," he said.
The emperor also spoke of his pride in his grandchildren. Princess Kiko, wife of the emperor's younger son, Prince Akishino, recently gave birth to a son, Prince Hisahito, the first boy born in the family in 41 years, and the presumptive heir to his grandfather's throne.
