CLEVELAND, Dec. 22 (UPI) -- Alleged Nazi concentration camp guard John Demjanjuk is one step closer to deportation from the United States, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported Friday.
An immigration appellate court on Thursday upheld a ruling that Demjanjuk, 86, is to be deported, either to his native Ukraine or another country.
The U.S. government has been trying to deport Demjanjuk for almost 30 years after accusing him of working at Nazi death camps. In 2002, a federal judge ruled that Demjanjuk worked in Nazi concentration camps during World War II. Demjanjuk has been appealing the decision since.
A statement released by the U.S. Justice Department said "(the department will) continue our efforts to remove Demjanjuk from this country as soon as possible."
Demjanjuk denies collaborating with the Nazis during World War II. If he loses this final appeal, he may be deported within 18 months.
