BERLIN, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Germany has dissolved an independent commission set up 16 years ago to find money owned by state institutions in the former East Germany.
The commission was created by Lothar de Maiziere, the last prime minister of East Germany, to follow "curious transfers" of money out of the country in 1990 as German reunification approached. It successfully retrieved 1.6 billion euros ($2.10 billion), Deutsche Welle reported.
Most of the money was in the hands of the Socialist Unity Party, which had governed East Germany, and its successor organization, the Party of Democratic Socialism. The recovered funds are to be used to pay off debts of former East German states, for research and memorials to victims of state terror.
"The German revolution was from this viewpoint not a real revolution, it remained -- thankfully -- incomplete," said Interior Minister Wolfgang Schauble added. "One of the consequences of this was, however, that the orderly processing of the past took time and effort."
