Poll: Almost half in U.S. creationist
NEWARK, N.J., Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Former New Jersey Senate President John Lynch was sentenced Tuesday to 39 months in federal prison for taking payoffs.
U.S. District Judge Stanley Chesler imposed a sentence close to the maximum possible under federal guidelines, the New York Times reported.
"Hopefully, public officials in this state will be looking at what happens here," Chesler said. "If you violate the public trust, you will be sentenced to prison. That has to be a given."
Lynch pleaded guilty to fraud and income tax evasion in September, admitting that he helped a sand-mining company get a permit.
During his years as one of New Jersey's most powerful Democrats, Lynch helped guide the political career of James McGreevey, who was elected governor in 2001 and resigned three years later, admitting that he was gay and had had an affair with a man he appointed to a high state office.
Lynch also served as mayor of New Brunswick for more than a decade.
