MIAMI, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- A university professor pleaded guilty Tuesday to spying on Cuban exiles in Miami for Havana for almost three decades, The Miami Herald reported online.

Carlos Alvarez and his wife, Elsa, admitted their guilt in a federal court to avoid prosecution on more serious charges of being Cuban agents not registered with the U.S. government, a crime that could land the couple in prison for up to 10 years.

Alvarez's wife also admitted that she had known about her husband's life as a Cuban spy.

"The entire case against Dr. Alvarez came from his own mouth," said defense lawyer Steven Chaykin.

The couple both worked at Florida International University in Miami, where Carlos was a psychology professor and Elsa was a counselor.
