EU support falls among Hungarians

BUDAPEST, Hungary, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Public support in Hungary for EU membership has fallen 10 points to 39 percent in a Eurobarometer poll published in Brussels Tuesday.

That is well below the average of the 25-member union's support level of 53 percent, Hungary's MTI news agency reported.

Since joining the union May 1, 2004, just 41 percent of Hungarians now say membership was beneficial for the country while the EU average is 54 percent.

Other statistics show a decidedly conservative contrast to other EU countries, such as 89 percent of Hungarians saying the current EU approach to crime is overly tolerant, compared with an EU average of 85 percent. As well, 18 percent of Hungarians support gay marriage versus the EU average of 44 percent, the report said.

The poll surveyed 1,005 Hungarians Sept. 6-25, and has a 3.1-percent margin of error.
