NEW YORK, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Ban Ki-Moon was sworn in Thursday in New York as the next secretary-general of the United Nations.
Ban, former foreign minister of South Korea, succeeds Kofi Annan of Ghana, who has served two five-year terms.
The oath was administered by Sheikha Haya Rashed Al Khalifa, the president of the General Assembly. She said she is convinced that Ban has the experience to "cut through the fog of mistrust."
"I am confident that leading by example Ban Ki-Moon has what it takes to make a great contribution to the organization and the global public that it lives to serve," she said.
Ban had been with South Korea's ministry of foreign affairs since 1970. His overseas postings include India, the South Korean U.N. delegation in New York and the embassy in Washington.
