DES MOINES, Iowa, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Hunters in much of the U.S. Midwest have been warned to keep their eyes open for methamphetamine laboratories deep in the woods.
Michigan State Police Lt. Chet Wilson told USA Today that at least three hunters have found stockpiles of chemicals and equipment.
Police and wildlife officials say that hunters who see what appear to be meth labs with people there should keep their distance. A South Dakota handbook advises hunters that coming close to a working lab while dressed in camouflage and carrying a rifle "can be a recipe for disaster," the newspaper said.
The law enforcement crackdown on the drug and its manufacture appears to have driven many people to the woods. Manufacturing meth involves working with chemicals that give off distinct odors and can alert the neighbors.
"Wildlife areas are a place cookers can go and not risk having the neighbors next door turn them in," said Rod Slings of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
