China fog pollutes air, stops flights

BEIJING, Dec. 12 (UPI) -- Heavy fog in North China is causing air pollution, canceled flights and traffic jams.

Traffic authorities in and around Beijing and Tianjin say fog has closed "dozens of stretches" of highways in and around both cities, as well as in Hebei and Liaoning provinces.

The Liaoning Highway Administration reported vehicles backed up for nearly 5 miles on the Hebei-Liaoning highway on Tuesday says China View.

Beijing Capital International Airport canceled more than 100 flights from Monday night through Tuesday morning.

The Beijing Environmental Protection Monitoring Center declared Monday the most polluted day this month.

The government advised restricting outdoor activities and asked for a reduction in emissions causing pollution.

Fog also affected East China and coastal areas of Central China Tuesday.

Meteorologists attribute the fog to high humidity and lack of wind. Forecasts predict the fog will be gone by Friday or Saturday because a cold snap is forecast for North China.
