MANILA, Philippines, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Defense attorneys offered evidence they said would prove former Filipino President Joseph Estrada is innocent of plunder and perjury charges.

Instead, defense attorneys said Gov. Luis "Chavit" Singson of Ilocos Sur should be held liable for misusing proceeds from the province's $2.6 million tobacco excise tax, the Manila Times said. Attorneys said Singson was motivated by revenge because he lost control of his illegal numbers game after the introduction of Bingo-2 ball and because Estrada did not give Singson a Bingo-2 franchise.

The defense also said Estrada was wrongfully charged because he had immunity and he was a victim of selective prosecution. Attorneys said the formal offer of evidence is intended to establish Estrada's innocence of the charges.
