Israel leader says Iran stalling on nukes

JERUSALEM, Ireland, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- A nuclear Iran would pose a threat to Israel and could seriously threaten Europe, the deputy chief of staff of the Israel Defense Forces warned Friday.

Maj. Gen. Moshe Kaplinsky said Iran currently is stalling for time to create "cracks in the international shield" and so far has been successful, citing Iran's acquisition of anti-aircraft missiles from Russia and attempts to seal arms deals with China, YnetNews.com reported.

"Iran is trying to turn Syria into a protected ally and is strengthening its involvement there," Kaplinsky told his audience.

He said Iranians are assisting Palestinians through funds, training, setting up terror groups and smuggling arms in Gaza and the West Bank.

Kaplinsky said the closer the ties between Hezbollah, Syria, Iran and Hamas grow, "we need to be more worried and aware."
