Serbia holds out on secret communist files

BELGRADE, Serbia, Dec. 7 (UPI) -- Serbia is Europe's only post-communist country that has not made public files of the former state secret service, a parliamentary party noted Thursday.

Six years after a pro-Western reformist government took power, Serbia has not decided to open the secret service files of people who worked as secret agents, the Serbian Renewal Movement party said in a statement.

The party's statement said it hopes a new government, to be formed after parliamentary elections Jan. 21, would include officials who would make the communist files open to the public, the Serbian news agency Beta reported.

Earlier this week, Bulgaria's parliament decided to open files of the Soviet-era state secret services, 17 years after the fall of the communist regime.
