SUVA, Fiji, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- Fijian coup leader Commodore Frank Bainimarama has proclaimed a state of emergency in the Pacific nation and dissolved parliament.
Armed troops sealed off the parliamentary building in Suva, forcing the Senate to adjourn a debate on a motion condemning the toppling of Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase.
"We have reasonable grounds to believe that the life of the state is being threatened," Bainimarama said in declaring the state of emergency.
"The primary objective of the interim military government is to take the country toward good governance, rid us of corruption and bad practices and, at the same time, promote the well-being of Fiji and its people."
The deposed prime minister and his wife were taken by soldiers before sunrise Wednesday and flown to his home island of Vanua Balavu in Fiji's remote east, witnesses said.
The country's main newspaper, The Fiji Times, suspended publication in protest at military censorship and the main TV station did not air its normal newscasts.
Australian and New Zealand political leaders condemned the coup and cut off aid and contacts with the military government.
