Hunger strike stops Croatia court inquiry

OSIJEK, Croatia, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- A Croatian war crimes suspect on a hunger strike for 38 days asked a court Monday in Osijek to stop an investigation into his case, media said.

Branimir Glavas, a parliamentary deputy arrested Oct. 26 on suspicion he took part in war crimes in the eastern Croatian town of Osijek in 1991, Saturday was released from his prison hospital bed and an investigation by a Zagreb court was stopped due to his poor health condition.

Glavas went on the hunger strike to protest his detention.

Saturday, Glavas was taken from Zagreb to a hospital in his native Osijek and defense lawyers Monday demanded the Osijek court stop a separate investigation, Croatia's Index.hr Web site reported.

On Nov. 22, the Croatian parliament lifted Glavas' immunity from prosecution. Glavas is charged with crimes against Serb civilians in Osijek 15 years ago, at the beginning of Serb-Croat ethnic war and the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia.
