OSLO, Norway, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- A Norwegian student who could get 15 years in prison for throwing a cake at the finance minister says he hopes to put his legal troubles behind him.
John Waagaard's trial began Thursday in Oslo, Aftenposten reported. A judge ruled that both Waagaard and Finance Minister Kristen Halvorsen could testify behind closed doors.
"It will be exciting to meet Kristin Halvorsen again, but I don't have much to say to her. I have already apologized for the incident," Waagaard said.
Waagaard purchased a cream cake on the day Halvorsen made her first appearance as finance minister and told another customer about his plans while he was waiting in line at the bakery.
His potential sentence is so long because he has been charged with attempting to obstruct the duties of a cabinet minister. Waagaard said he realizes what he did was wrong but believes the charge is too serious.
He had an exam at the Norwegian School of Management on Friday and said he hoped to be free to take it.
