Security beefed up ahead of Lebanon rally

BEIRUT, Lebanon, Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Hundreds of police officers and armored vehicles have been stationed outside Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora's Beirut offices ahead of a major protest.

The officers and vehicles were put into place Friday morning as part of an unprecedented security effort ahead of a planned large-scale protest lead by Hezbollah, YNetNews reported Friday.

Leaders of the protest, scheduled to take place Friday afternoon, claim the Lebanese government has been operating illegally, and have demanded the creation of a "national unity government" that would include at least one-third Shiite Muslim representation.

Such a government would give Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah veto power on government decisions under Lebanese law. A two-thirds majority is required to pass any measure in the country.

The rally is expected to include members of Hezbollah along with the Shiite Amal movement, Michel Aoun loyalists and other opposition groups. The groups announced Thursday that they will be collectively known as the National Lebanese Opposition Forces.
