Russian government honors nation's mothers

MOSCOW, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- The lower house in the Russian parliament has honored mothers as part of the country's annual Mother's Day celebration.

The lower house, the State Duma, released a statement Sunday in honor of Russia's annual Mother's Day celebration saying what a major influence the nation's mothers have upon its past and future, the Novosti press agency reported.

"This holiday symbolizes society's attention to everlasting human values and confirms the great significance of women as mothers in preserving stability and the good in today's world," the State Duma said.

"Today hopes for the improvement of the demographic situation in the country are linked with mothers, women," the house statement added.

To recognize the impact women and mothers have had upon Russia, parliament is creating laws that would help improve conditions in child birth and rearing, along with raising national prestige for mothers, Novosti said.
