Winds, rain cause flooding in Britain

EXETER, England, Nov. 25 (UPI) -- Severe winds and rain tore leaves from trees in parts of Britain Saturday, clogging storm drains and flooding basements.

Torrential rains across Devon and Cornwall left motorists trapped in their cars and flooded homes.

Winds of 50 mph blew leaves from trees, clogging drains and causing flooding, particularly in southwest England and southeast Wales, Britain's meteorological office said.

Fire departments pumped out several basements, London's Dailiy Mail reported. Some highways were also flooded, particularly near the Brynglas Tunnel in southeast Wales, The Daily Mail reported.

Forecasters expected the rain to diminish Sunday, with cloudy skies across the north and outbreaks of rain from Wales and northern England on northward to Scotland. They predicted patchy rain showers in Northern Ireland and drier weather in southern England.
