Gunman standoff ends at Herald

MIAMI, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- After hours of negotiating, Miami police Friday detained a gunman who had entered the offices of the Miami Herald newspaper.

A police negotiator told United Press International that alleged gunman Jose Varela laid down his weapons after more than three hours of talks via cell phone.

Varela was a contractor cartoonist with the Miami Herald's Spanish-language newspaper, El Nuevo Herald. He had reportedly expressed a number of grievances with the editors of both papers and declared himself the new editor of El Nuevo after barging into the newsroom.
