CHICAGO, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- A police standoff in Chicago ended Friday with the deaths of a gunman and his female hostage in an apparent homicide-suicide, police said.
The standoff began early Thursday morning when an armed man took two young women hostage at an apartment on Chicago's South Side. It was not immediately known what became of the second hostage, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.
Police said they were unable to comment on the gunman's relationship to the hostages.
"It appears that it may have been a homicide-suicide at this time," said Monique Bond, spokeswoman for the Chicago Police Department.
"At about 1 a.m., a shot was heard and then that's when the SWAT team entered in the back door" of the apartment, Bond said.
Attempted negotiations with the gunman proved unsuccessful, as had a televised appeal from the suspect's sister. Bond said the gunman was known to have been watching television during the standoff.
