British school fires woman for Muslim veil

DEWSBURY, England, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- A Muslim teaching assistant in West Yorkshire, Britain, has reportedly been fired for refusing to remove her veil in class.

Aishah Azmi is believed to have been fired from Headfield Church of England Junior School after being suspended earlier in the year, Sky News Friday.

Sky News said an employment tribunal ruled against Azmi's claims of discrimination and harassment in October, but awarded her about $2,000 for "injury to feelings."

The school had told Azmi she would be allowed to wear the veil around the school, but she must remove it in the classroom, saying face-to-face communication was necessary for her position as a bilingual support worker.

Azmi told school administrators she was willing to remove the veil in front of children, but not in front of male coworkers, Sky said.
