Group warns of toy dangers

BOSTON, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- The U.S. Public Interest Research Group in Boston warns toys hazardous to young children are still available at stores across the country.

The group's 21st annual toy safety survey, released Wednesday, said many toys remain available to consumers despite the inclusion of parts that pose choking or strangulation hazards or contain lead or powerful magnets.

"While we can report substantial progress after more than two decades of advocacy on behalf of America's littlest consumers, U.S. PIRG's researchers still found trouble in toyland," said lead author and PIRG Director Alison Cassady.

Cassady recommended that regulations on toys be tightened to prevent injuries and deaths related to toys that met existing safety guidelines.

"Even one toy-related death is too many, because these deaths are preventable," Cassady said.

The report also called for parents to be vigilant when shopping for their young children.

"Shoppers should examine all toys carefully for hidden dangers before they make a purchase this holiday season," Cassady wrote.
