Lawyers group wants former Thai PM tried

BANGKOK, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- Some groups in Thailand want former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra tried for crimes against humanity, arguing that he is responsible for hundreds of deaths.

Thaksin was deposed by a military coup this year.

The National Human Rights Commission and the Lawyers Council on Thailand blame Thaksin for the deaths of 2,500 people who died in a campaign against drugs in 2003 and 2005, the Bangkok Post reported.

"Saddam Hussein was charged with committing crimes against humanity for the killing of 170 people," said Somchai Hom-laor, chairman of the council's human rights committee. "In that case, the 2,500 deaths we witnessed here must constitute crimes against humanity."

Somchai participated in a discussion organized by the Press Association.
